The functions of the VA disability rating system

|

Veterans in Texas are compensated for any injury they experience while serving their country. A VA disability rating is assigned to a disability claim that is filed with the Department of Veterans Affairs. The rating indicates the type of disability and a percentage of the compensation up to 100%.

The VA disability rating system

A VA disability rating system is a collection of percentages that rank a variety of medical conditions related to military service. Examples of relevant conditions are posttraumatic stress disorder, loss of a limb and symptoms related to Agent Orange exposure. The type of rating is influenced by the severity of the VA disability. A higher rating means a higher compensation given to the veteran.

The types of ratings

A veteran who has multiple health conditions receives a separate rating at a different percentage. The percentages are combined to create a collective rating varying from 0% to 100%; however, the rating cannot exceed 100%.

A list of the percentages is published by the Department of Veterans Affairs. Some conditions are rated at 0% while others cannot exceed a certain percentage. If it seems that a medical condition is not permanent and could improve, the veteran often is not awarded a 100% rating.

Receiving benefits as a veteran

The VA disability rating system provides financial compensation to veterans based on different types of disabilities. The additional benefits of disability ratings include the ability to apply for home loans, grants, tax savings and other discounts provided by the state and federal governments. First, the veteran undergoes a claims review process to assign a rating based on the severity of the medical condition, its nature of development and its temporary or permanent status.
